みなさん、こんにちは!
Part 3-0 from Japanese Phonetics with Fumi is available now.
It's the introduction of Japanese pitch accent.
Pitch accent has two important functions:
To help differentiate between words that would otherwise sound identical, for example:
あめ (candy) and あめ (rain) We can tell them apart by the pitch accent.
To indicate word boundaries. For instance, the phrase まいにちしんぶんをよみます can have two different meanings:
"I read the Mainichi Shinbun" and
"I read a newspaper every day." We can distinguish between them by the pitch accent. Please check the video and listen to the differences.
Additionally, I uploaded a new blog episode titled "こうし/こおし: When 'ou' is not a long vowel." This episode discusses the differences in spelling and pronunciation and might be a little bit advanced.
Have a great day!"
