Commands for dogs/pets

みなさん、こんにちは！

Did you see my latest Japanese listening practice video, in which we went for a walk with my neighbor’s dog, Koma-chan?

In the video, some commands were used with Koma-chan.

I’ll share some of them today.

おすわり　（Sit.）

ふせ　（Lie down.）

おて　（Paw.）

おかわり　（Other paw.）

おかわり usually means “second helping” or “refill.” It refers to another bowl/glass/cup of something.

For example, you might hear at a restaurant, 「お水のおかわりはいかがですか？」(Would you like a water refill?). In Japan, a glass of water served with dishes you order is free.

However, when used with your pet, it means “another paw.”

Here are also some words to praise your dogs(pets):

えらいね　（Well done.）

すごいね　（Impressive.）

できたね　(You were able to do it.）

いいこだね　（Good boy/girl.）

You can also use these with your young kids. えらいね／すごいね can be used with an adult as well. If you say them in a polite form, they become えらいですね／すごいですね.

Here’s my Kuro.

He doesn't do anything, but I say いいこだね all the time to him even when he drinks water.
